First Deer of the Season

Opening morning of bow season started about as perfectly as I could have hoped. I woke up early and was settled into my stand about an hour before first light. It was a chilly morning, the kind of weather that just feels right for opening day.

Not long after daylight, two deer came running in along the edge of the field I was hunting beside. At first I couldn’t tell how big they were because they were both about the same size. I actually thought they might just be yearlings and was considering letting them pass.

Then I decided I wanted to take my first opportunity of the season.

One of the does gave me a shot at about 20 yards, and the arrow went right through the heart. She didn’t even make it another 20 yards.

When I walked up to her, I was glad to see she was actually a good-sized doe. It felt good to start the season with a successful hunt and know I was putting meat in the freezer.

This hunt also gave me a chance to try something new. It was the first deer I hauled out using my Velotric Nomad 2X e-bike with a trailer attached, and it worked perfectly.

A chilly opening morning, a clean shot, meat for the freezer, and a new way to get a deer out of the woods. I couldn’t have asked for a much better start to the season.
